It’s perhaps one of the biggest issues for the calendar year. Essence Magazine‘s May Issue features truly gigantic Game Changers in U.S television, Shonda Rhimes, Ava DuVernay, Mara Brock Akil, Debbie Allen, and Issa Rae.
The special issue begins with Shonda Rhimes, creator, writer, and executive producer of hit shows Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away With Murder. In the issue, Shonda Rhimes shares her views on her success and the dominance of Black women like herself in U.S television. When asked to reflect on the current success of black women like herself, Shonda Rhimes said:
“I don’t think it’s a trend. It’s an economic fact. There are more people of color in this country than there ever have been before. We’re going to reach a tipping point, and I think it’s 2018, in which the number of young people of color in this country becomes more than the young people not of color. You can’t ignore what is happening economically. When you put a show like Empire on television and it’s doing bigger numbers than a show like the Big Bang Theory. It’s just clear that there is an economic force and the corporations can’t deny that.”
